A little about me
My name is Kathleen Venegas Bermúdez, and I am an advanced Systems Engineering student at Universidad Fidélitas. I am especially interested in data, technology, web development, and learning new tools. I am always willing to continue learning.
During my studies, I have worked with different technologies and university projects, but before starting WPCredits, I mainly knew WordPress as a platform for creating websites. I did not know in detail how its community worked or the different ways in which a person could contribute to its development.
As part of my first steps, I created and configured my profile within the WordPress.org community.
Why am I participating in WPCredits?
I decided to participate in WPCredits because it seemed like an opportunity to learn about WordPress from a different perspective. Beyond using the platform to design websites, the project makes it possible to connect with the community, learn about its teams, and make contributions that can benefit other people.
I was also interested in the opportunity to learn through practice. Instead of limiting myself to studying concepts, I had to create an account, become familiar with the community’s tools, select a contribution area, and document each part of the process.
At the beginning, I was still unsure about which area I would choose or what type of activities I would carry out. However, I hoped to find an option that matched my skills, interests, and way of working.
My expectations at the beginning
At the beginning of the project, my expectations were:
- To better understand how the WordPress community works.
- To learn about the different areas in which people can contribute.
- To learn how to use the platforms and tools related to the project.
- To make real contributions and observe their review process.
- To strengthen my skills through practical experience.
- To clearly document my progress, difficulties, and learning.
I also expected the project to help me feel more confident within a technology community. Although I am studying a related degree, joining a new platform and participating in a collaborative project can create uncertainty, especially when the rules, terminology, and work dynamics are still unfamiliar.
Personal reflection
I began WPCredits with curiosity, but also with some uncertainty. I did not know exactly what the process would be like or how difficult it would be to participate in a real technology community.
However, the first steps helped me understand that it is not necessary to know everything from the beginning. What matters is following the instructions provided in the guides, exploring the tools, asking questions when necessary, and learning from each activity.
In the following posts, I will document my onboarding process, the selection of my contribution area, and the experiences I gained as I began participating in the WordPress community.
