After completing the onboarding stage and learning about the different teams that are part of the WordPress community, it was time to select the area in which I would make my contributions during the WPCredits project.
This decision was important because each team carries out different tasks. Some areas are related to programming, design, documentation, photography, support, or community activities. Therefore, before making a choice, I needed to consider which option best matched my knowledge, skills, and interests.
The area I chose
The team I selected was Polyglots, which contributes to the translation of WordPress, themes, plugins, documentation, and other community content.
This area caught my attention because it combines language and technology. Although translation may seem like a simple task, it is necessary to understand the context of each string, preserve the meaning of the original text, and use expressions that sound natural to users.
It also seemed like a practical way to contribute. By translating content into Spanish, more people can use WordPress tools and features in their own language.
Why did I choose Polyglots?
One of the main reasons I selected this area was my interest in working on tasks that require analysis, accuracy, and attention to detail.
Translation is not simply about replacing English words with Spanish ones. In some cases, the same word can have several meanings, and its translation depends on where it will appear within the platform. It is also necessary to review punctuation, capitalization, technical terms, and consistency with other translations.
In addition, Polyglots allowed me to connect two areas that I find interesting: language and technology. It seemed like an opportunity to use skills I already had within a technical and collaborative environment that was new to me.
The professor’s support was also important during this stage. Her guidance helped me better understand the characteristics of each team and choose an area that matched my abilities and the objectives of the project.
Process for selecting the area
To make the decision, I followed these steps:
- I reviewed the information presented during the induction.
- I learned about the main WordPress contribution teams.
- I analyzed the activities carried out by each team.
- I compared those activities with my skills and interests.
- I reviewed the work done by Polyglots in greater detail.
- I chose this area as my main contribution space.
- I began familiarizing myself with the tools and terms used in the translation process.
Initial obstacles and questions
One of my first misunderstandings was assuming that translation would be a direct and mainly linguistic process. However, as I learned more about the work carried out by Polyglots, I understood that it also involves technical elements.
Strings may contain variables, links, symbols, or instructions that must not be modified. In addition, some phrases appear with very little context, so it is necessary to investigate how they are used before suggesting a translation.
I also had questions about the difference between translating a string and approving it. During the process, I understood that contributors can suggest translations, but these must be reviewed by people who have the corresponding permissions within the team.
What I learned
By choosing Polyglots, I understood that even a small task can have an important impact. Correctly translating a single string helps make the platform easier to understand for people who use it in Spanish.
I also discovered that translating technological content involves much more than finding equivalent words. It is necessary to analyze the context, make sure the message keeps its original meaning, and avoid altering variables, symbols, or other technical elements.
Personal reflection
Choosing Polyglots made me feel more confident about beginning to contribute because I found an area connected to my interests and to skills I could apply from the beginning.
At the same time, I understood that I still had a lot to learn. I was curious to find out how translations were submitted, which aspects were reviewed, and how long approval could take.
This choice marked the beginning of a more practical stage within WPCredits. The next step would be to access the translation platform, review the available strings, and make my first contribution.
